Dr. Kathleen Brady serves as the Vice President for Research at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She is an experienced clinical and translational researcher who has worked in the field of addictions and psychiatric disorders for over 30 years. Her research focuses on pharmacotherapy of substance use disorders, comorbidities of psychiatric disorders, and gender differences in addiction. She has received numerous federal research grants, published over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and co-edited 10 books. She has served as the president of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Use Disorders (AMERSA), the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and is currently the president of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM).

Background and Education

Dr. Brady received her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, a doctorate in pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia, and her medical degree with a residency in psychiatry from MUSC. She has gained international prominence for her research in addiction psychiatry with a remarkable track record of NIH funding and publications. 

Her awards and appointments include being named the distinguished psychiatrist lecturer at the 157th Annual American Psychiatric Association Meeting, receiving the Founders’ Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, receiving the Betty Ford Award and being on the Scientific Advisory Boards for the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism.
