Frequently Asked Questions for Patients

Answers to patients' questions - ranging from how the Genecept Assay works, to ordering, test cost, and more.

Why is my clinician ordering the Genecept Assay® for me?

The Genecept Assay® is a test (assay is a scientific term for test) that looks at genes that may affect your body’s ability to benefit from certain drugs and other treatments. The Genecept Assay® is the only test of its kind that looks at a group of key genes that are specific to mental health treatments. Your clinician is ordering the test for you because it can help them decide which medication(s) and dose(s) may work best for your symptoms.

What is the potential benefit of having the Genecept Assay® test?

In a recent study, clinicians reported that 87% of their patients showed improvement with treatment guided by the Genecept Assay®. They also reported improvement in 91% of patients who had failed at least two medications in the past. Testing with the Genecept Assay® can help your clinician and you choose a medication and dosage that work well for your body, whether you are new to treatment or your current treatment isn’t working. This can save you time and money. Best of all, you can feel better much sooner.

How does the testing process work?

The Genecept Assay® is a simple test; it requires only a small sample of your saliva, collected by swabbing the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab. The test is painless and easy to perform. The sample is sent to Genomind for testing. Your test results are reported to your clinician in 3–5 business days after your sample is received at the laboratory.

Can I, the patient, order the Genecept Assay®?

Only a clinician can order the Genecept Assay®. Talk to your clinician to find out whether it is right for you. For help in speaking to your clinician about this testing, please visit our Talk to your Doctor page.

How fast will I know the results of the test?

Genomind will send a results report directly to your ordering clinician within 3-5 business days after the simple cheek swab sample arrives at our lab.

Can I see the results of my test?

The test results will be provided directly to your ordering clinician. You may ask your clinician to provide a copy of your test results to you.

What kinds of treatment recommendations will my clinician make for me?

The Genecept Assay® does not make treatment recommendations. Your clinician will make a recommendation based on the results of your test, combined with their own expertise of your medical history and your current condition.

Why did you choose to include the particular genes that you have in the Genecept Assay®?

Our clinical research and development team has chosen to include a comprehensive group of key genes to make up the Genecept Assay®. These genes were selected based on hundreds of studies showing that variations in these genes can inform treatment decisions in psychiatry.
