The Science Behind MentalHealthMap™

The human genome contains approximately 20,000 protein coding genes, and a third of those are active primarily in the brain. Your unique genetic profile influences how you think, feel and behave. The Mental Health Map tests for specific genetic variants that have been shown to influence behavior, mood, stress response and more across 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities.

Your 7 in-depth reports will show you how to use the personalized insights and actions to support and improve your mental wellness.

7 In-Depth Reports

Each report identifies possible mental health predispositions based on your genotype. This means you are more likely to react or behave a certain way.

Heightened Stress, Fear and Startle Responses, Worry, Lingering Guilt, Nervousness, Tension, Rule Follower or Warrior-Like Resilience.

Moodiness, Irritability, Even Tempered, Type A Personality, Reserved, Low Mood and Energy, Negative Bias, Thick-Skinned or Thin-Skinned.

Inattentiveness/ Distractibility, Decreased Working or Visual-Spacial Memory, Improved Muscle Memory, Mid-Life Brain Fog, Strategic Focus, Impulsivity.

Late-Night Snacking, Emotional Eating, Skipping Breakfast, Picky Eating, Sweet Tooth, Fat Cravings, Overeating.

Night Owl or Early Bird, Trouble Falling Asleep, Snoring, Limb Movements in Sleep, Sensitivity to Sleep Deprivation, Daytime Lethargy.

Performance Anxiety, Sensitivity to Rejection or Decreased Self Esteem, Dwelling on Embarrassment, Empathetic, Lone Wolf or People Person, Trusting.

Increased Habit-Forming Potential, Comfortable with Risks, Easily Intoxicated, Nicotine Habit Potential, Sensitive to the Effects of Marijuana.

What's Included in Each Comprehensive Report

Each core genetic mental health capability is influenced by traits, which result from the interaction of your genetic makeup and your environment.

Mechanisms are decided by genes that code for proteins, enzymes and receptors in the body. Mental health mechanisms impact the way you function in the world, form thoughts and display emotions.

We inherit two copies of most genes. One copy is inherited from our father and another from our mother.

This combination is your genotype and influences your traits.

The reports identify genetic predispositions you may have for various traits. While this means you may be more likely to feel or behave a certain way, your environment and lifestyle are factors too.

Each report includes detailed insights and actions you can take to improve different areas of your mental wellbeing based on the latest genetic science.

Real People, Real Wellness Stories

“There are so many areas I knew I struggled with but was not sure really how to put a name to some of these issues. This test gave me so many ways to help myself. I could pay $150 a session at a counselor for one hour. To me this is something I will have forever for the same cost as 3 or 4 sessions with a counselor. Now if I do want to seek help, we can dig right in on my issues.”

Juli S.

“This was an eye opener for me! When you have a child who struggles in one area or another, as a parent, often you feel there is nothing you can do. This showed me there is something specific I can do. I’m all about having tools in my toolbox! This offered me two amazing, very actionable things that will give us peace of mind. I can’t say enough about how this has been reaffirming for us. The results were dead on and very helpful.”

Paige M.

“The way that this process involves both genetic results and support on how to affect your given predispositions is truly amazing! It’s a unique, refreshing mix of research and compassion that I am grateful to have finally found. Results are provided in a way that emphasizes how you are more than just your DNA. This can help you gain the help to overcome obstacles you previously thought immovable.”

Lauren M.

“What I learned from my report was invaluable. I now feel I have the tools to improve my mental health and better understand ‘me’.”

About the MentalHealthMap™ Test

Will my report tell me which mental illnesses I or my family have?

While the Genomind® Mental Health Map™ provides powerful insights into a person’s predispositions within 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities™, it is NOT diagnostic, nor are there genetic tests for any mental health condition. Discussions regarding mental illness diagnoses and predispositions should be directed to your healthcare provider.

How does Mental Health Map™ differ from other genetic tests?

The Genomind® Mental Health Map™ test is the only available direct-to-consumer product that is designed specifically for mental health and wellness. In addition to identifying genetic predispositions for the 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities™, the recommendations provided are significantly more in-depth and genetically and biologically-based than most. It includes several genetic variants that are not on tests like 23andMe. It provides in-depth insights that were developed with a clinical evidence threshold that is higher than most direct-to-consumer genetic tests due to our heritage and expertise in providing genetic mental health insights to clinicians for over a decade. It also contains unmatched transparency with level-of-evidence summaries.

How does the Genomind® Mental Health Map™ differ from Genomind® PGx?

The Genomind® Mental Health Map™ analyzes your genetic predispositions across 7 Core Mental Health Capabilities™ —Eating Behavior, Sleep, Habits and Substance Use, Mood, Focus and Memory, Social Behavior, and Stress and Anxiety— to give you a starting point for understanding and improving your mental wellness. This product is ordered directly by a consumer from Genomind® without a prescription and does not inform on medications. The test is not intended to help diagnose or treat any disease or other medical condition, nor is it intended to provide a genetic health risk assessment for any diseases or conditions.

Genomind® PGx is a comprehensive genetic test that is a prescription product obtained by a licensed health care provider in order to help select appropriate pharmacotherapy for individuals with various mental illnesses; it is not available for purchase directly from Genomind® by a consumer. While a few of the genes included on Mental Health Map™ overlap with those on Genomind® PGx, their interpretation and relevance is quite different.

Where does the information in the Genomind® Mental Health Map™ come from?

The information and interpretation of the genetic results in the Mental Health Map™ come from various sources in the public domain. Genomind® expertly curated 100’s of the world’s genome wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate gene studies to provide the framework and content for the Mental Health Map™ and the 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities™. The Mental Health Map™ is a concise, easy to use source for the world’s collective knowledge on genes related to mental wellbeing. Our experts have first-hand experience with real world mental health issues, having consulted with and educated tens of thousands of clinicians and patients. These years of experience helped guide the selection of our 7 Core Capabilities™ and the traits that tend to be most concerning for people. Our evidence summary is openly available and our scoring of gene-trait pairs is public and transparent. One common source of GWAS data is the UK BioBank, which maintains de-identified health information on about 500,000 individuals (mostly of European descent). Much of this information is publicly catalogued via the NIH GWAS Catalog.

Other sources of information include candidate gene studies, i.e., studies in peer-reviewed literature that hypothesized that genes related to certain biological mechanisms would likely affect traits related to that mechanism. For example, if oxytocin is related to social connections, then the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) should affect social connections. We have evaluated hundreds of these articles and rank them by level of evidence.

A complete evidence summary review document, with references, is available with purchase of the product.

Is the Genomind® Mental Health Map™ approved by the FDA?

Our laboratory is certified by CAP, CLIA and the NYSDOH, the top laboratory credentialing agencies in the US. Direct-to-consumer tests, like Mental Health Map™, which are used for non-medical, general wellness, or low risk medical purposes are not reviewed by the FDA and hence do not require approval or clearance. My MentalHealthMap™ Test Results

What is the best way to share these results with my healthcare provider?

Once you have access to your Genomind® Mental Health Map™ results, it is your decision to show these results to your health care provider. You can share your online report in person or provide the printable PDF summary. However, neither you nor any of your providers should use these results to make any diagnosis.

I am already involved in treatment for various mental health conditions. What does this offer me that my current treatment does not?

The test will help you gain deeper insight into your genetic predispositions influencing various behaviors, such as sleep or stress, and will provide actions that you can take to better control these behaviors. The Genomind® Mental Health Map™ should NOT be used to treat mental health conditions. This test should NOT be considered a substitute for your current treatment plan with your mental health providers.
